Towards a Cultural Strategy for Launceston

You are warmly invited to attend an information session at the Queen Victoria Museum (Inveresk) on Monday, 26 March 2018 at 4pm.

The aim of the session is to share with you, what has been done, what is happening now and where we are headed to in the short, medium and long term.

We acknowledge that it has been a long process to get to this point but we are determined to get the right Cultural Strategy for Launceston - one that is uniquely its own and one that will create the kind of creative community that its many artists, performers, writers, musicians, producers, videographers, digital creatives, poets, comedians, playwrights, designers, architects, choirs, film-makers and the many other cultural practitioners are proud of.

As one of the original people who generously gave time to the various consultation processes leading up to the delivery of the interim report to Council by Robyn Archer AO in April 2017, we would like to provide you, first, an update on the state of play before the next phase commences.

Your continued involvement would be greatly appreciated and welcome. I do hope you can join us.*

Kind regards

Richard Mulvaney

Director - Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery

Re: Bird Nesting Sequence For Ponrabbel Habitat ( Tamar/Esk Confluence)

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your email and the information provided.

A couple of further questions arise that you may be able to answer quite quickly:

  • Can you direct me to the appropriate CSIRO Officer and in what location?
  • Was this collection a QVMAG collection or a personal collection held by Dr Green?
  • If it was in the QVMAG collection when did the donation take place and under what circumstances?
  • Can you direct me to an active 'field naturalist' working in Tasmania and investigating the region's ornithology?

Thank you again for the information provided it is much appreciated.

Regards,        Ray

Mr Norman,

Regarding your enquiry about RH Green's egg collection, I can tell you that it was donated to the National Wildlife Collection, CSIRO. I recommend that you contact that agency for more information.

Our library lists the following bird-related publications by RH Green (see below). These may be of assistance to you.

I hope this helps you with your research.

Good afternoon,

I've been advised that most likely Dr Bob Green most likely would have collected eggs for all the bird species that inhabited and/or visited what I'm now calling 'The ponrabbel Habitat'. Is there such a record and if so does it document:

  • A comprehensive list of birds that inhabit/ed the area and/or likely to have pre-settlement?
  • The likely abundance of the various species?
  • The nesting times for the birds and the likely number of times per season they would have nested?
  • The colour, size and numbers of eggs per clutch?

If such information exists and is available I would appreciate some indication of what does and/or who else might have it.

Upper House Inquiry: dates changed again!!

It has just been brought to our attention that, in the on-line schedule for the Inquiry into Museums and Galleries, the date of 4 April for the 9th hearing has been changed again! In its place are two hearings, one on Monday, 28 May (3 hours), and another on Friday, 1 June (2 hours).

There is no information as yet about who will be interviewed, although we know that the former Premier, Mike Baird, was one of those to be summonsed to attend. For more details – and transcripts –  as they appear, check:

And to keep up with reports about possible plans, plots, fiascos, backflips, takeovers and continuing questions about government funding and management, especially relating to the proposed move of the Powerhouse Museum to Parramatta, see our summaries of latest news:  https://powerhousemuseumalliance.com/find-out-more/a-news-chronology/
